Harakiri:

Can We Still Rise From Senseless Suicide?

(First Edition, 2008)

Ed Aurelio C. Reyes

"Featuring the Privilege Speech og the Late Sen. Jose Alonzo Mercado Delivered at the Senate on August 9, 2010"

An "Informative Literary Work' about a very serious national issue that challenged the honor of the Philippine Senate.

Author plucks out a famous historical figure from a century ago, and places him in a new heroic role two years from now as a newly-elected Senator of the Republic after that "august body" was body was disgraced by its members one august two years before by ratifying a clearly suicidal "treason try" with Japan.

Fiction flow of this literary piece carries endnotes from thick fibers of fact on the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement, its damning details, and the statements of criticism it received from citizens' groups in various sectors.

Written as fiction by one who prays: "Let it stay that way!"

pinatatampok nito ang simbulo o talinghaga ng ilog na kumakatawan sa ating nagsasanib-sanib at nagsasanga-sangang pagdaloy nang tiyakan din namang tumutungo sa pagkakaisa ng karagatan.

My 2nd Open Letter to Rizal

(First Edition, 2007)

Ed Aurelio C. Reyes

read table of contents

This highlights an open letter to Jose Rizal, written as a response to his essay, "On the Indolence of the Filipinos" (with that essay also here in full), thus continuing a dialogue with this national hero stretching across more than a century since the time Rizal's two essays were being serialized in the fortnightly La Solidaridad.

This also carries the English translation of Rizal's original "On the Indolence of the Filipinos,"  author Reyes' Mi Primero Adios (My First Farewell), as well as a column item ("Why Compare Our Heroes") and another essay, "The People and Governance," both by the same author.

Ding Reyes Writes 30...

'W i s h p e r s'

...Poems and More

(First Edition, 2007)

Ed Aurelio C. Reyes

  read table of contents

This little book carries "30, plus more" of the favorite insight-filled poems of the author, with the earliest-written piece dated 1970 and the latest one just this April.

The title and the pervading theme play up a play of words, specifically the words "whisper" and "wishes" which are combined to create a new word for fervent prayers -- mine (the author's own), yours, and other peoples' -- our common and diverse "wishpers."

This book highlights a belief in a profound biblical promise that when we wishper together, Christ Himself is in our midst.

The Philippines,

A Century Thence

An Open Letter to Rizal

(Second Edition, 2007)

Ed Aurelio C. Reyes

 read table of contents

This book carries the author's first open letter to Rizal a full century after that national hero wrote "The Philippines, A Century Hence" making certain "fearless forecasts" on the future of the Philippines within a century of his time. The open letter started a "continuing dialogue" with Rizal by analyzing the latter's accuracies and failures in prediction, continuing the story of what actually happened in the century that followed, and offering to Rizal a description of the present-day Filipino. It carries the English translation of Rizal's original essay.

The 2nd edition adds explanatory footnotes, column items, and guest articles one that relates mysterious occurrences when author Reyes played Rizal in the latter's martyrdom centennial.

BONIFACIO:

Kilala Ko?

(English Version)

(First Edition, 2004)

Ed Aurelio C. Reyes

read table of contents

Many people admit that they have not read a single work of Andres Bonifacio, saying he had very few writings. The author of this book challenges the logic of this excuse especially if coming from avowed fans of this national hero, because being few would make his entire body of work easier for anyone to read its entirety. Other fans feel no need to see his writings and prefer to picture him only with a bolo and a gun, thus denying that he had an eloquent legacy in socio-historical discourse. And many of the better-off simply complained that his language was "too deep," whatever this meant. This book is the English Version of an earlier one to help the people who are more comfortable with this language get to know this great man well beyond the guns and the bolos that he had also used in leading the revolutionary process that birthed our nationhood in 1896.

Cita Lives!

Thoughts & Feelings

on Living & Passing

(First Edition, 2004)

Ed Aurelio C. Reyes

read table of contents

It took this 'author' a full decade after the passing away of his wife Cita Soriente-Reyes before he could come out with this book carrying quite emotional entries from her diary and other notebooks, as well as her letters to various people that were all written as she battled malignant melanoma. Cita had decided early on to be pro-active in this fight, and the pages of this book shine with her findings as she did extensive research on her type of cancer and the usual attempts to cure it. These same pages rage with indignation against what she sees as insensitivities, outright miscalculations and hollow excuses offered by many western-trained doctors.

This is actually Cita's book. He merely put it together for the many people she continues to inspire with her life, up to now

ODYSSEY

of the Filipino Voter

Exciting Adventures,

Little Progress

(First Edition, 2004)

Ed Aurelio C. Reyes

read table of contents

It all began in his senior high school year when the author, then a bespectacled teenager handed in a term paper that spoke out his disgust with what was then the electoral campaign of late 1969. Later he added longer historical perspectives to his views on this, as he became a journalist with much output on election-related goings-on around him. He first came out with an overview piece signed with a penname. Later, he and a workmate were supplying a nationwide network of 15-newspapers with a four-part post-mortem on a fairly recent electoral landslide that has made history "for better or for worse." It's all in this little book on the "exciting adventures and little progress" of the Filipino as voter. And, yes, it includes that teenager's paper.

Human Holons

Power-Packed Synergies

(First Edition, 2002)

Ed Aurelio Reyes

read table of contents

This is one of this author's major works, presenting the synergetic and holonic framework which he claims to come very close to essentially enlightening all the various matters of concern, inquiry, behavior and evolution as total humans individually and collectively

Applied to various fields of human concern, the syergism principle provides a useful framework for successful practice in building productive unity among large clusters of people, which would both be bonded among one another upon both spiritual and scientific grounds. After all, synergism is really both a loud clue and a practical reward for attaining conscious oneness among us all, indeed the current human evolutionary imperative,

The five members of the SanibLakas Foundation's program team for Cooperative Education on Synergism (C.E.S.) worked together to produce this second edition of the booklet closely relating the operation of the principle of synergism to the essence and operational dynamics of cooperatives. Their joint and separate articles show the essential link between synergism and cooperativism, unlocking the puzzle as to what makes some coops grow and why many others wither and die.

This also carries the Declaration of Commitment of the Advocates of Cooperative Education on Synergism (ACES) and the list of the first 100 member-signatories of this loose group united on solidifying the cooperative sector in this country.

(Second Edition, 2001)

Ed Aurelio C. Reyes

read table of contents

Author Ding Reyes has been known as a staunch nationalist. And as a campaigner for sense of history, it surprises no one that he would write about the more than half a millennium of rampaging colonialism across all these centuries of world history. So, he throws back to the likes of Rudyard Kipling the title of latter's own poem, The White Man's Burden with an entirely new sense-- from 'call of duty,' as Kipling meant it, to 'sense of shame' as the norms of decency would dictate. Cases  from North and Latin America, Asia and Australia are narrated with details most of which are still largely unknown in the world.

This book also carries the original Tagalog and the English translation of the author's poem Tahanlahi,

This thin hardbound volume carries a collection of SanibLakas-composed declarations that have become bases of unity of the various SanibLakas-initiated synergism-oriented networks and organizations, like Sanib-Sining, Salika, Sanib-Sigla and many others.

More importantly, perhaps, for most people who'd get their copies of this, it also carries a collection of seven classic items like The Lord's Prayer, Desiderata, Prayer of St. Francis, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

If the author of The Little Prince were a campaigner for active environmentalist advocacy and stakeholdership, he would probably written his classic work the way the little book, Biped on the Blue Ball  shaped out.  The author wanted to come out with an informative book that would capture and hold the interest of the readers, and decided to tell a story that just flowed on and on, but with little number superscripts that pointed to data-laden endnotes.

First Edition came out in 1990 and five dozen copies were distributed among delegates to the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The second edition came to respond to the need to update the rich trove of environmental data in the first one. There may be a need for a third edition soon, with special emphasis on the current state of global warming. Writing of that has been started.

read table of contents

It was an honor for SanibLakas Foundation, almost still in its infancy, to be the institutional author (represented by SanibLakas co-founders Reyes and Cadahing-Ocampo) of this book commemorating a full decade of people-empowering work of Canada-funded Philippine Development Assistance Programme, Inc. (PDAP). The writers really enjoyed the very thought of having the opportunity to promote the synergism principle as successfully applied to the work of PDAP in many grassroots communities in the country.

The resulting volume combines much experiential information and valuable learnings in local development work, including the specifics in the early histories of development work in these areas. A must-read for leaders and workers of community-rooted non-government development organizations.

My NoveLife

My Novel-view of Life

(First Edition, 1996)

Ed Aurelio C. Reyes

read table of contents

This started out as a reaction to a mysterious pager message that the author received from his "Lady Writer Friend" and the equally mysterious series of failures of appointments set with her in the succeeding days. It developed as a semi-narrative series of essays on novel-writing, and more into a series of essays that talked about everyone's own life as a novel being written mainly by the "Great Author" in tandem with a co-author who is also the main character in that novel, co-authoring by making choices as he or she confronts circumstances.

Many readers have tried and failed to put this work in any category of writing, The author reminds all not to assume that the whole thing is fiction or that any part of it is.

Press Freedom:

The People's Right

Repression and Assertion

in the Philippines

(First Edition, 1992)

Ed Aurelio C. Reyes

read table of contents

Enlightening editorials and informative blow-by-blow accounts in the pages of the crusading monthly magazine Press Freedom Advocate (1987-1994) were combined with extensive research on the principles and premises of the  people's right to freedom of the press to form this guidebook for press freedom advocacy in the Philippines.

The author, as founding secretary-general (later president) of the Philippine Movement for Press Freedom (PMPF) and editor of the latter's PFA magazine, included in this volume, all the classic quotes that he could cull from philosophical and judicial sources and added declarations initiated by the PMPF to be issued as joint statements of multilateral media formations, including "Principles and Premises on the Press," which clearly reconciled the seemingly conflicting advocacies of press freedom and ethical journalism.

C

TIWAKAL!

Dying for Dollars

[A Scrapbook of 'Clippings from the Future']

(First Edition, 1991)

Ed Aurelio C. Reyes

read table of contents

In this "Scrapbook of Clippings From the Future," the author made it obvious that the simulated clippings on a tragic nuclear explosion scenario in Subic, with news items datelined  after the book's publication month, were written as fiction. And he prayed aloud for it to stay fictitious, because he dreaded becoming a vindicated prophet of doom. The many footnotes and endnotes were clearly factual, lending plausibility to the fictitious parts.

The author sent complimentary copies to all the senators of the Republic who were preparing to vote whether or not to preserve the U.S. military bases. Some of them wrote to thank him for helping them decide. A giant volcanic eruption followed the Senate decision to scrap the bases, and the rest is history. Still, this book remains a good possession to have, both for its enlightenment and its creative novelty, a notable souvenir from a recent historical period.
